Lavik

Lavik is a village and former municipality in Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. Lavik is on the northern shore of the Sognefjord, approximately 100 kilometers north of Bergen and 50 kilometers west of Høyanger.

It was created as Lavik formannskapsdistrikt in 1837. In 1858 the district of Klævold was separated from Lavik to constitute A municipality of its own. The split left Lavik with 2.042 inhabitants.
In 1861 Lavik was merged with Brekke municipality, located across the Sognefjord, to form the new municipality Lavik og Brekke. On 1 January 1875 a part of Klævold with 90 inhabitants was moved to Lavik og Brekke. On 1 January 1905 the municipality was split, leaving Lavik and Brekke as separate municipalities. Following the split Lavik had a population of 1.182.
On 1 January 1964 Lavik was merged with Kyrkjebø and a part of Vik to form the new municipality Høyanger. Before the merger Brekke had a population of 894.

The village of Lavik is mainly a farming community but recently developing into a transport hub on the E39, the main route from Bergen to Trondheim. Lavik is the northern point of the Lavik to Oppedal ferry served by Fjord1. There are several services in the small harbour: A snackbar, a pizzeria, a hotel and restaurant on the Fjord, a supermarket, a bank, a service station and several other shops.
