Laurence Calvert

Laurence Calvert VC MM (February 16, 1892- July 6, 1964) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
He was 26 years old, and a Sergeant in the 5th Battalion, The King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, British Army during the First World War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.
On 12 September 1918 at Havrincourt, France, severe enfilade machine-gun fire was creating a difficult situation and Sergeant Calvert went forward alone against a machine-gun team, bayoneting three and shooting four. His valour and determination in capturing single-handed two machine-guns and killing the crews ensured the success of the operation. His personal gallantry inspired all ranks.
