Laura Joh Rowland

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Laura Joh Rowland is the author of a series of mystery novels set in the late days of feudal Japan, mostly in Edo during the late 1600s.

They mainly deal with the efforts of Sano Ichiro a former Ronin who becomes the chief investigator for the fifth Tokugawa's shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi and his problems to follow the code of bushido while serving both justice and his master, the Shogun. There are currently eleven volumes in this series starting with the highly acclaimed Shinju to the most recent work, Red Chrysanthemum.

Evidently some historical licence has been taken, with somewhat fictionalised versions of Tokugawa Tsunayoshi and Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu being major characters. Non-fictional details, however, are credibly accurate.
