[edit] Australian Idol
Laura, was 21 years old when she auditioned for Australian Idol. The judges were unsure whether to put her through. "Your performance sounded fake," Mark told Laura, "I just can't see you getting far in this competition." In the end, Mark gave her a 'no', but Marcia and Kyle decided to give her a go, giving her a 'yes.'
During her Australian Idol journey, Laura proved that she had what it takes to be the Australian Idol. She progressed from the top 100, into the top 75, to the top 55 and then to the top 30.
In her Semi-Final performance, Laura sang "Don't Let Go" by En Vogue. The judges were all disappointed with the horrific performance saying that her vocal was extremely pitchy and out of tune.
The next night, Laura awaited the verdict. She was told that she was in the top 4 for the night. Kate DeAraugo and Milly Edwards were sent through leaving Laura and Roxane LeBrasse in great tension. "Our final contestant going through to the top 12," announced James Mathison, "is Laura Gissara." Laura made the finals amidst much controversy regarding her performance. Laura was shocked by the performance and so were the judges. She was then asked to sing the song that brought her through (receiving as much warmth from the performance as the first time).
On the Australian Made theme night, Top 13, Laura had to prove that the voting public made the correct decision in voting her through. She sang "You're My World" by Daryl Braithwaite. All 3 judges said it was the best they have ever heard her sing, despite it being slightly pitchy. On the Live Verdict the next day, Laura was told she was safe for another week.
A week later, on 60's night, Laura sang "Don't Play That Song" by Aretha Franklin. She judges said it was pretty much in tune all the way, but she didn't put enough feeling into the song. The next night, Laura was told she was part of the bottom 3 along with James Kannis and Natalie Zahra. James was sent back to the couch before Natalie was told she was leaving the competition. Laura was safe for another week but would have to lift her game the next week if she wanted to remain in the competition.
On the Supergroups theme, a week later, Laura performed The Greatest View by Silverchair. Laura was told that her performance was lame and she didn't move well on the stage. All judges were disappointed with her performance and saying that she could be going home the next night.
Laura awaited the verdict, only to find she was part of the bottom 3 once again along with James Kannis and Daniel Spillane. Daniel was told he was safe for at least another week before Laura was told she had the least number of votes and was going home.
She was then asked to sing for the final time in the competition. She struggled through opening bars of "The Greatest View", but showing her courage once again, she soldiered on, rallying to finish the song on a high note.
During Laura's time in the Top 13, allegations were levelled against her that her father, a Telstra employee, had tampered with the telephone voting results. An investigation ensued, finding these claims to be false.
