[edit] Summary
In science class, Mrs. Hertz is teaching the class about nitrous oxide, more commonly known as laughing gas, and its effects. It can be dangerous if not neutralized by water quickly. Meanwhile, Yumi's parents are having trouble with their relationship, which Yumi isn't too happy about. No one can seem to cheer her up, even Ulrich. He eventually manages to do so, however, and helps her find a way to bring her parents back together. During a school production of Romeo and Juliet, XANA possess the laughing gas in the science room and uses it to attack Odd, who is doing the music. Sissi pours water on him, unaware of the cause of his maniacal laughing. When Odd tells the others about his experience, they realize that XANA must be behind it. The play turns out to be the perfect way to get Yumi's parents back together, so Ulrich, who is forced into playing Romeo, and Yumi, who plays a guard, stay behind while Odd heads to Lyoko. Just as Odd is about to depart, the XANA-possessed gas goes after each member of the group. Odd gets to Lyoko, but the gas goes with him, weakening him severely. Jeremie is chased away from the Factory by the gas and is forced to take refuge in the sewer water. Finally, Ulrich and Yumi are attacked during the play. Aelita and a weakened Odd have to get to the Tower before the others laugh themselves to death.
[edit] Recap
After the opening, we hear Mrs. Hertz laughing as Jeremie says, "I've never seen her laugh so much." Odd replies with "You're telling me! I've never seen her laugh at all." Mrs. Hertz says that the laughing is from Nitrogen Futoxide, or N2O, more commonly known as Laughing Gas, and tells them why the gas is sometimes used in Hospitals to relax the user. She also says that too much of it can make them literally die laughing. She tells them that to voltilize it, drink water splash it on themselves, with at least 1 drop. She then downs half a bottle of H20 and the serious Mrs. Hertz returns, telling her students to take out a pencil and paper for a pop quiz.
Outside on the Quad, Yumi is sulking as Ulrich tries to calm her. Jeremie asks Odd if Ulrich has any chance of raising Yumi's spirits. Odd says, "Yeah. About as much chance as I have of Julia Roberts calling me up and asking me out to dinner!" Yumi responds to Ulrich's attempts with, "If you like talking so much, then talk to yourself." She walks away. Sissi butts in with Ulrich and tells her that not all girls are like that. Ulrich replies with "Yeah, that's a shame.", and walks away. Sissi runs to Ulrich and asks him if he is coming to the rehearsal of her play. He says "Yeah, I'll be there, but not for you. It's for Odd."
In the Science Classroom, one of XANA's ghosts emerges from a fried electrical outlet and possess the Laughing Gas containers, unscrewing the nozzles releasing deadly gas with evil eyes in the middle.
That night at the Ishiyama House in the suburbs, Ulrich knocks on the door. He hears Mrs. Ishiyama in the foyer saying, "Oh darling, I knew we couldn't stay mad at each other forever." She abruptly cuts herself off when she sees Ulrich on her front stoop. She allows him upstairs when he politely asks if he could see Yumi. In Yumi's room, Ulrich and gives her a flower. The Japanese girl sniffs it and says, "Thanks Ulrich, you really know how to cheer a person up." The two start talking about Yumi's parents' fight with each other.
In Jeremie's room at school, Aelita asks her friend about fighting and getting along. Aelita wonders aloud if she and Jeremie will fight, and she also is a bit worried about the risks they all take.
At the rehearsal, Hervé is reciting his lines, badly, in Sissi's reproduction of William Shakespeare's famous tragedy, Romeo and Juliet. In the background, Odd is providing Itallian Renaissance mood music by strumming on an acoustic guitar. Sissi, as Juliet, calls out Hervé for his lackluster performance and Nicolas accuses Hervé of killing the script, instigating an argument. They retake, and Odd is suddenly taken over by the Laughing Gas. Sissi pours water on Odd for revenge, and tells the confused boy that they are performing a tragedy, not a musical comedy.
In another one of the city's residential neighborhoods Yumi is standing on the front stoop of the house where her father is staying with a coworker. The owner of the house opens the door and asks Yumi if she knows what's wrong between her parents. She pushes past him, saying she doesn't. Yumi goes into her father's room and says that she wants him to come home. Her dad explains that the situation is between him and his wife and to let them handle it. Yumi cries, stating that they're not even willing to talk to resolve their conflict.
After that, in Jeremie's room, Odd tells him what happened. Jeremie muses, "N2O, laughing gas... Mrs. Hertz said that the only thing that can voltilize it was water." Odd thinks it could be XANA's doing, but Aelita senses no pulsations. They then go to see if anything happened to the N2O containers.
Meanwhile, in Sissi's room, Ulrich gets him and Yumi a part in the play through some intense negotiation.
In the Science Classroom, Jeremie and Odd see that the containers are empty. The two immediately strike out for the Factory.
In Lyoko, Aelita is running from two Bloks.
Jeremie transfers and scans Odd. Before the Scanner closes, some laughing gas gets in and screws up the data transfer, making Odd get weaker in Lyoko later. Laughing Gas also causes the Defender to lose his life energy.
In the Lab, Laughing Gas gets in the room via the vents, and Jeremie presses keys on the keyboard rapidly, performing a slapdash virtualization. He runs away from the room. The computer says, "Data Transfer Problem."
In Lyoko, Odd feels weak and tries to ask Jeremie, but the operator is out of the room by then. Odd screams, "Jeremie!".
In the Auditorium, Sissi signs up Ulrich and Yumi for the play. Ulrich becomes Romeo and Yumi is assigned the part of a Capulet guard. Sissi shows Yumi the guard's costume. When Yumi puts on the frock and voices conerns about its look, Sissi retorts saying, "Don't be silly, you look really stunning." Yumi's parents are coming, by means of lying and telling each one that the other wasn't going to come.
In the Pipe Room, Jeremie is running away from the Laughing Gas as the gas seems to laugh.
On Lyoko, two Bloks are in front of a Tower as the Lab is full of Laughing Gas.
In the municipal sewers, the gas is still chasing Jeremie. It infects him and causes him to roll around laughing uncontrollably. Jeremie soon topples into the sewer channel. The sudden immersion in water volatilizes the gas and it leaves Jeremie's body.
In the Auditorium, Headmaster Delmas is greeting people as Yumi's mother comes in. When asked where her husband is, Mrs. Ishiyama and lies by saying her husband is not feeling well. Yumi's father comes in afterwards, and Headmaster Delmas says, "Oh, Mr. Ishiyama, I'm delighted to see that you're feeling better already." When asked by the guest what elicits such a greeting, Headmaster Delmas informs Mr Ishiyama that the latter's wife is here and previously stated that her husband was ill. Mr Ishiyama hesitantly asks, "My...wife...is here?" Nevertheless, he sits beside his wife, who ignores his presence.
On Lyoko, Odd defeats one Blok with a Laser Arrow. He defeats the other by sneaking up on it, and soon reaches Aelita.
Ulrich is performing horribly at the play, constantly stuttering, forgetting lines and checking the script tacked to the prop tower and balcony. Backstage, Nicolas tells Hervé, "He's massacring my text! Even you did better!" The audience laughs at these blunders. Ulrich peers at the script and says, "Oh! A guard!" and dives behind a prop bush. Yumi, clad in a puffy 17-century pinstriped uniform and bronze helmet, appears onstage with a spear. The audience laughs at her ridiculous getup. Despite this embarrassing moment, it seems to briefly bond Mr. and Mrs. Ishiyama, who have a good laugh at their daughter's expense before remembering that they are sitting next to each other.
In the Water Room of the sewer, Jeremie is shivering in the chilly sludge. He tries to walk away, but the gas follows him wherever he goes. Jeremie then asks himself, "How do you want to die? Freezing (chuckles), or laughing?" He splashes water on the gas and takes off.
On Lyoko, Aelita and Odd find a Labyrinth around the tower, which Aelita comments is the last thing they need.
The gas is then flowing through the school, save the Auditorium.
Odd and Aelita are finding their way around the maze as Odd drops to the ground slowly.
In the Water Room, Jeremie swims away from the pursuing gas.
Back at school, a thin trail of Laughing Gas floats down an aisle in the Auditorium past the oblivious audience members. When Sissi says a line, the Laughing Gas infects Ulrich and Yumi. As Ulrich laughs, Sissi splashes water on him. The entire audience is laughing also. Ulrich says he feels like he was being controlled. Sissi gives Ulrich the bottle and he splashes it on Yumi as her parents gather around her and her mother says she was worried about her daughter. The tenaciously wilfull gas then attacks Ulrich again and Yumi soon after, sending them into raptures. Headmaster Delmas asks what's going on while Mrs. Ishiyama cries for help.
In the Water Room, Jeremie is taken over by the gas as he attempts to run down the sewer channel catwalk.
On Lyoko, Odd gets a Anticipation and tells Aelita about the correct path to the Tower. He's too weak to move any further, so Aelita wants him to rest and conserve whatever energy he has left in his body. Odd props himself up against a stone promontory while Aelita runs off.
Jeremie can barely breathe, as Aelita gets to the Tower just in time and deactivates it, executing a time reversion. (NOTE: Jeremie's voice echoes through the Factory, even though he can hardly breathe. He is perhaps thinking it.)
The previous morning the gang is gathered around Yumi on the Quad. While leaning on a bench, the Japanese girl vehemently declares that she won't act in "that stupid play" ever again. Jeremie points out that at least now they know how to reunite the Ishiyamas. He then turns to Ulrich and says, "sorry Ulrich, but you're going to have to sacrifice yourself one more time." Ulrich gives his friend a nervous glance. That night at the play Ulrich is still giving a sub-par performance. This time, however, Yumi is prompting the lead actor of his lines while hiding behind the prop bush. When Ulrich says, "oh. A guard," and jumps behind the prop bush, Hervé (who was recast) comes out on stage in the same costume. The audience guffaws at this ludicrous costume and Hervé walks off the stage. Behind the curtain, Odd and Jeremie yank down the pulley and the prop bush is lifted up, revealing Yumi and Ulrich. This causes the audience to break out in uproarious laughter and successfully breaks the ice between Mr. and Mrs. Ishiyama. Sissi bawls at the audience, saying that they don't get drama. No one cares, however. The episode ends with riotous laughter emanating from the Library's auditorium.
[edit] Memorable Quotes
- Sissi: Don't worry Ulrich. Not all girls are like Yumi.
- Ulrich: Yeah. That’s a shame.
- Sissi: Why are you all laughing? You don’t understand drama! This is not a comedy; it’s a great tragedy!
- Jeremie: Do you think Ulrich can manage to get her to smile?
- Odd: Yeah, sure as Julia Roberts is going to call and invite me out to dinner.
- Jeremie: (as he's picking a lock) Odd, Aelita and me, we never fight. You think that's normal?
- Odd: (distracted while on the look-out) What? I don't... well, how should I know?
- Jeremie: You think we'd fight if she lived in our world?
- Odd: I think we're gonna get caught if you don't hurry up!
- Jeremie: (to himself) Okay Jeremie... how do you want to die? Freezing or Laughing?
- Sissi: Herve, I would rather you read your lines again, with more feeling! Nicholas, there's no reason for you to be on stage! And Odd, you're playing much too fast!
- Odd: Ok, if I play a little slower, I'll have time for a short nap.
[edit] Trivia
[edit] Basic Science
- Adding water to Nitrous Oxide would not neutralize it, even if it was properly combined in a chemical reaction.
- Ironically, Nitorus Oxide, or "Laughing Gas", actually won't make you laugh. It will merely relax a person inhaling the gas (it can indeed be dangerous though, if overdosed). It is indeed commonly used by dentists and surgeons, but to relax the patient and make them less nervous about the upcoming procedure; not to make them laugh.
[edit] Allusions to the Real World
- Odd: Yeah, sure as Julia Roberts is going to call and invite me out to dinner.
Julia Roberts is a famous American actress.
- The school play that Ulrich, Yumi, and Sissi are involved in is one of William Shakespeare's most famous plays, Romeo and Juliet.
- FOOTNOTE: The lines of Romeo and Juliet Ulrich and Hervé recited in the play's balcony scene were not the actual lines from Shakespeare's original script. They were altered by Nicolas, who penned the reformed script.
