[edit] Notability of John Eric Hawkins

A tag has been placed on John Eric Hawkins, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable, that is, why an article about that subject should be included in Wikipedia. I found this on the for biographies page: "Painters, sculptors, architects, engineers, and other professionals whose work is widely recognized (for better or worse) and who are likely to become a part of the enduring historical record of that field." which applies directly to John. I do know him personally and dedcat(sorry, Jim is really hard to get a hold of) confirmed his notability in the late nineties. If this is going to be a problem then I will just wait until he dies, artist like John are not known until they are truly lost. Lathama

I placed the warning on your talk page because I had a gut feeling that John Eric Hawkins might be notable even if it was not clear from the article. I was hoping that you would get the message in time to fix the article, but I am glad that you at least contacted me.

In general, it is best to write rough drafts of articles off-line and wait until they are ready before posting them onto mainspace. For example, I wrote this response on a word processor before posting. Some editors also create a sandbox page in their user space. If I knew how to do so I would tell you.

In order to write a page that does not get deleted, you do need to show how Hawkins is notable. A vague assertion will not do. Most importantly, you need to verify Hawkins’s notability by citing sources that are reliable. Ideal examples would be newspaper articles reviewing exhibitions at major museums or scholarly articles discussing his importance. If Hawkins’s work is taught in university classes, there should be scholarly works discussing his notability. Blogs, internet forums, and self-published works such as fan pages are generally not considered reliable.

This is the English language Wikipedia, so it is best if these sources are in English. It is also best if the sources are available online so other editors can easily check them out. However, print sources and sources in other languages are acceptable if they are reliable. A conversation with your contact would not be acceptable as a source, but he could probably point out some good sources that you can use. Finally, any sources you cite should be independent from Hawkins himself and preferably from you as well, although you could include Hawkins’s home page as an external link in addition to more reliable sources.

Finally, if you know Hawkins well, you should be aware of Wikipedia’s conflict of interest policies. You are not banned from making pages discussing people you know well, but doing so raises NPOV concerns.

Thanks FreeKresge, I will try to write up a more complete bio before I post. I use mediawiki for my website lathama if you want to look, a sandbox can be created in a multitude of ways, if you want I would just try this Sandbox Lathama 18:39, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
