Latchford, Ontario

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Latchford is a town in the Canadian province of Ontario, on the James Bay Frontier, located in the Timiskaming District near Cobalt, Temagami, and is 13 miles (20 km) to the southwest of Temiskaming Shores (New Liskeard). Latchford became a settlement in 1902 when it was reached by the Northern Ontario Railway. Latchford is on the Montreal River.

The Sgt. Aubrey Cosens VC Memorial Bridge is the town's most recognized symbol. It was named after a World War II recipient of the Victoria Cross from Latchford. The bridge failed on January 14, 2003 but is now fixed and running smoothly.

The town's slogan is "The Best Little Town by a Dam Site!" With a pun on the word "dam" because Latchford is on the site of a dam.

Latchford is also home to the world's shortest covered bridge.
