[edit] What use are categories?

I opened up the categories page, and it is a bloody mess. I was trying to find what category to put a new page into, but I couldn't find any relevant sections. There is a huge disambiguation problem, but what's more, there is no way one could use the categories to actually find anything. What are they there for? - Laszlo Panaflex 10:38, August 6, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Sockpuppet

Hi, I'm not sure what that is, but it does sound a little scary! JBH 00:56, 19 November 2005 (UTC)

sorry, I see you put a link to it, I'm not sure why you think that I am another user, I just came across the deletion page after looking up irish americans. JBH 00:59, 19 November 2005 (UTC)
Perhaps it is merely a coincidence, but you registered after voting began on this page, which is one indication of sock-puppet voting. Looks like the page will survive, though, if relevant links are added. Laszlo Panaflex 01:28, 19 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] NewsRadio

A few weeks ago, I made a correction to the NewsRadio page, which you then reverted. However, according to the NewsRadio Episode Guide, I was not mistaken. Do you have another source that contradicts me? Many thanks. – ClockworkSoul 05:52, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

  • Nevermind - I figured out my error. I was using the absolute episode numbers rather than the season numbers. – ClockworkSoul 05:56, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image Tagging for Image:ThePit2.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:ThePit2.jpg. The image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to indicate why we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies under Wikipedia's fair use guidelines, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use. If you want the image to be deleted, tag it as {{db-unksource}}.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion.

[edit] Image Tagging Image:Pit-front2.jpg

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Pit-front2.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. [edit] Image:Thepit4.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Thepit4.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --ccwaters 22:16, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] List of characters from The Simpsons

Welcome to Wikipedia. We invite everyone to contribute constructively to our encyclopedia. Some of your recent edits, such as those you made to List of characters from The Simpsons, have been considered unhelpful or unconstructive and have been reverted or removed. Please use the sandbox for any test edits you would like to make, and take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. Do not link articles in mainspace to your userspace. Natalie 14:32, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] The picture in your user space

Sorry, I don't want you to feel like I'm picking on you, but the screen shot on your userpage needs to be removed. It doesn't meet the fair use criteria because your userpage isn't an article (see criterion # 9). Please remove it immediately. Thanks. Natalie 14:36, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

Given that you have messaged me, you are obviously online. You have to remove the picture from your userspace, as it violates fair use, immediately. You are violating the copyright of the Fox Network. Natalie 16:07, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
I've removed the image for you. If you have any questions please don't hestitate to ask. Natalie 16:17, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Cross name-space linking

Because you're not allowed to link from mainspace to userspace, as my first message to you indicates. It gives the impression that your userpage is an article, which it isn't. Also, you need to source the assertion that Laszlo Panaflex is an allusion to another person with the same name. Natalie 16:06, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

So the reference may still be included, but not linked to my page. Correct? Laszlo Panaflex 16:11, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
Yes, provided you source it. Sorry, but pages about the Simpsons attract all sorts of crap from people without sources. So if this was mentioned on a DVD commentary or similar, please add a source. Note that IMDB is not an acceptable source for trivia, as that is user generated content. Natalie 16:14, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
The source is the reference itself and the picture of the camera on the screenshot you say I cannot include. Laszlo Kovacs is well linked to the Panaflex camera (see sources on his page), and a movie camera appears on the star. The source is in the episode. That is at least as good a source as those provided for the other cultural references listed on the page; no DVD commentary or further sources are listed for the others, some of which are overtly speculative. Indeed, it is very similar to the MacArthur Park cultural reference listed on the page. Does that need a source, too? Laszlo Panaflex 16:33, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
Firstly, you may be able to include the screen shot in the article, if it meets the fair use criteria, but you absolutely cannot have it in your userspace. This is further elaborated at the fair use pages. Secondly, while your reasoning makes perfect sense, I'm afraid it violates Wikipedia's policy against original research and the requirement of attribution. Lastly, "article x breaks the rules, so article y can, too" is generally not a good argument. I would suggest that if you would like to work with the Simpsons WikiProject on finding sources for trivia, they would welcome your help. Natalie 16:39, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
The argument is that some references are obvious in and of themselves. Where will you find a source for the proposition that the name "MacArthur Parker" refers to the song "MacArthur Park"? It is too obvious for anyone to say on a DVD commentary or write in an article. Similarly, the reference "Laszlo Panaflex" explains itself, if you know who Laszlo Kovacs is and what a Panaflex camera is. An explanation on the page makes that clear for those who do not. Laszlo Panaflex 16:49, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
True, that is somewhat of a gray area as far as original research goes. This is my suggestion - take this either to the article talk page or to the Simpsons WikiProject and see what they say. You can re-add it to the article, and I won't revert (bad form), but I can't guarantee that others will not revert. So discussion first is probably the best bet. Natalie 16:52, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
