Last Bridge

The Last Bridge is an important fictional place within J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth legendarium. The Last Bridge was actually the last bridged crossing of a river on the Great East Road when travelling east. The bridge spanned the river Mitheithel or Hoarwell and separated the flat country below the Weather Hills from the Trollshaws on the eastern bank of Mitheithel. The bridge served as an important landmark on the road from Bree to Rivendell, as it was just over the halfway mark between these two points. The Last Bridge was at least a weeks' journey east of Bree, and it took the Hobbits in the company of Aragorn the ranger a fortnight.

In The Fellowship of the Ring, Aragorn finds a jewel on the bridge that was left by Glorfindel as a warning as to the Nazgûl then searching the Great East Road for the One Ring. Glorfindel mentions waging battle with the Nazgûl upon the bridge, as to make it safe for the Hobbits and Aragorn to reach Rivendell.

Bilbo Baggins, the dwarves, and Gandalf crossed this bridge during the Quest of Erebor, though it is not specifically mentioned, and their encounter with the trolls occurred nearby.
