Las Raíces Tunnel

Las Raíces Tunnel (Spanish: Tunel Las Raíces) is the longest road tunnel in Chile with a length of 4,528 m. Las Raíces Tunnel is part of the 181 motorway that links the town of Lonquimay in upper Bío-Bío River with Curacautín both in Araucanía Region. The 181 route then continues to Argentina trough the Pino Hachado Pass in the the Andes mountains.

It was built in 1939 and have until 2007 not being modified exept for matention. The tunnel allows only one-way transit so vehicles have to wait for the transit direction to change. Despite of not being asphalted the tunnel is passed daily by heavy fuel trucks coming from Argentina.
