Lars Hollmer

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lars Gustav Gabriel Hollmer, born 1948, is a Swedish musician (primarily accordion and other keyboards) and composer whose work has drawn on influences from Nordic folk tunes to progressive rock. Early work in the late 1960s-early 1970s with the band Samla Mammas Manna was considered progressive rock (even in 2002, a re-formed Samla Mammas Manna played a two-day festival called Progfest in North Carolina), but he is most centrally an empathetic and generous collaborator; whether as a member of Accordion Tribe, working with the experimental guitarist Fred Frith, or spending several months with Japanese jazz players, he seems to find a style that brings his partners to the fore while remaining identifiably Hollmer. He has been a member/founder of over half a dozen groups, most of whose work has been recorded at his low-tech studio in Uppsala, The Chickenhouse.

Consistent elements of his music throughout his career have been the use of irregular time signatures, often changing several times within a piece; a daring sense of improvisation, particularly vocal improvisation utilizing nonsense syllables; and complex polyrhythms. Though his work is little known in the United States, he won a Swedish Grammy award in 1999 for his record Andetag. He has also composed extensively for Swedish films, and for theater and dance productions.
