Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt (at one point known as "El Rhino" and "Ryno") is an American guitarist who started his musical career in 1967 with a Georgian based band called "Load" and left in 1969. From 1969-1970 he was guitarist for "The Second Coming." In late 1969, Rhino and Blues Image guitarist and lead singer, Mike Pinera were recruited to replace Iron Butterfly's guitarist from their famous In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida and Ball albums, Erik Brann. From late 1969 to early 1970 Iron Butterfly recorded and released their fourth and only albums with Rhino and Mike Pinera, Metamorphosis. After Iron Butterfly disbanded in 1971 Rhino and fellow Iron Butterfly bassist Lee Dorman immediately formed Captain Beyond and recruited Bobby Caldwell on drums and Deep Purple vocalist, Rod Evans. The lineup consisted of Rod Evans with vocals and writing duties, Larry on lead guitars, Lee Dorman on bass and backing vocals, and Bobby Caldwell on drums and writing duties. With this lineup Captain Beyond released their first album Captain Beyond. In 1973 Captain Beyond recorded their live album: Far Beyond A Distant Sun - Live Arlington, Texas, but this album wasn't officially released until 2002 by the Dream Clinic, and can be found for sale on eBay. In 1973 with Bobby Caldwell left and Rod, Lee, and Rhino were left to find another drummer, Marty Rodriguez, and also recruited a keyboard player and recorded and released Sufficiently Breathless which had a Latin jazz flavor to it. Shortly after Captain Beyond broke up. In 1974 he guested on two songs by Bobby Womack(Don't Let Me Down/I Don't Want To Get Hurt By Your Love Again) on the album Lookin' For A Love Again. In 1976 Lee Dorman, Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt, and Bobby Caldwell reformed Captain Beyond and first recruited a singer by the name of Jason Cahune but was shortly replaced by Willy Daffern (Willy Dee), and they recorded and released their third studio album Dawn Explosion in 1977. Shortly after Captain Beyond once again broke up. For the remainder of the 70s Rhino formed "The Ryno Band" which ended in 1981 and Rhino joined Mad Dancer with singer/guitarist Gary Graber, Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt on lead guitar/vocals, Joe Starkovich on drums, Ron "The Liar" Larsen on bass, and Perry Stronge on lead vocals. With this lineup Mad Dancer released their only album "Lost Worlds" of which Rhino performs on three songs: "Still A Boy," "Serious," and "Such A Feeling." Rhino has been in many incarnations of Iron Butterfly (1978, 1980, 1984, 1989, and in 1989.) In 1991 he played on the Robert Tepper album "No Rest For The Wounded Heart" which was finally released in 1996, having been recorded in 1991 as Iron Butterfly. Rhino quit the music business until in 1998 he and original drummer Bobby Caldwell reformed Captain Beyond with Jimi Interval on lead vocals, Dan Frye on keyboards, and Jeff Artabasy (also known as "The Count") on bass to finish up the lineup. In late 1999-2000 this lineup recorded a four track ep with songs "Don't Cry Over Me", "Gotta Move", "Be As You Were", and "Night Train Calling (Crystal Clear)." Captain Beyond is still touring today and there is of yet not much info on a new album.
