Large is an English surname, with rare variants including Lardge, Lurge, and Larg.

The meaning of the English surname Large is unclear, though it may derive from the Norman French adjective, large, meaning generous, as it is found as the surname 'le Large' in English records dating back as far as the 13th century. The form 'de Large' appears to be continental European rather than English in origin.

Henry Brougham Guppy's work, "Homes of Family Names in Great Britain", counted it as being a local surname found in North Wiltshire, and considered it to have particular prevalence among yeoman farmers, when he made his survey based on local directories, circa 1881. According to the International Genealogical Index (www.familysearch.org) the surname is also found in many other English counties, as well as in Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. In addition, instances of a surname of the same spelling are to be found in France, Germany, and, more rarely, in the Scandinavian countries. The same source reveals that this surname is borne in other parts of the world, notably in the former British dominions, and in the United States of America.
