In The Magician's Nephew, Jadis the White Witch, tore off an iron bar from a lamp-post in London. With the iron bar still in her hands, she was transported to Narnia just minutes before its creation, along with Polly Plummer, Digory Kirke, Uncle Andrew, the cabbie and his horse, Strawberry. All witnessed the creation of Narnia. During the creation, the White Witch threw the bar at Aslan's head and when it fell to the ground it grew into a new lamp-post. This was due to Aslan's song, which caused things to grow at an accelerated pace during the first days of Narnia. Two other trees, one made of pure gold and the other of silver, sprouted from Uncle Andrew's half sovereigns and half crowns respectively.

Centuries later in Narnian time, in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Lucy Pevensie meets Mr. Tumnus at Lantern Waste. It is reported that C. S. Lewis' first vision of Narnia was a faun (Tumnus) wearing a scarf and carrying an umbrella, walking by a lamp-post.[citation needed]

It is also here that Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy returned to our world.

Lantern Waste remains a prominent location throughout the series of novels, most notably in the final book of the series, The Last Battle where the final battle for Narnia is fought.
