Lanier Middle School (Buford, Georgia)

Lanier Middle School is an award-winning public school in Buford, Georgia, grades 6-8.
The Georgia state Department of Education awarded the school a "2006 Platinum Award for Greatest Gain in Percentage of Students Meeting and Exceeding Standards" after the school improved its percentage of students meeting and exceeding state testing standards. With 92.84 percent of students at or above state standards, a gain of 3.32 percent over the year before, the school improved more than 99.54 percent of middle schools in Georgia, according to the state's "report card" for the school.[1]
The school is part of the Gwinnett County Public Schools System and is in the North Gwinnett Cluster. Lanier Middle School feeds students in to North Gwinnett High School. The school is run by Principal Jaime Espinosa. A total of 2,463 students enrolled in 2006 and the school is forecast to have 3,206 by the 2010-2011 school year. The school hours are 9:20 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. Lanier offers a variety of programs and sports such as basketball and cheerleading for eighth grade, and a step, dance, and running team for all other grades, with many other non-athletic clubs. Lanier has PROBE classes for students that are determined to be "Gifted" by the school system. These classes offer more in-depth review and higher level thinking for the participating students.

[edit] Redistricting Plan
Lanier middle school will begin a plan to redraw district lines beginning in 2007. The plans, which includes renovating and expanding the current Lanier Middle School in preparation to convert the current school into Lanier High School by 2010. This plan will create a new cluster known as the Lanier Cluster. Right now, Lanier Middle School is in the North Gwinnett Cluster, but by 2010 will be completely independent from the old cluster with the opening of this High School. Lanier High School will also have a new Lanier cluster Middle School and a Lanier Cluster elementary school.
