Lanett, Alabama

Lanett is a city in Chambers County, Alabama, United States. At the 2000 census the population was 7,897. Lanett is located in eastern Alabama, on the Chattahoochee River, northeast of Montgomery. One of the major industries is cotton milling. The city's name is derived from Lanier and Bennett, founders of the West Point Pepperell Co.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.0 km² (5.4 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 7,897 people, 3,186 households, and 2,125 families residing in the city. The population density was 564.6/km² (1,463.6/mi²). There were 3,589 housing units at an average density of 256.6/km² (665.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 45.36% White, 53.58% Black or African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.10% from other races, and 0.63% from two or more races. 0.80% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 3,186 households out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.1% were married couples living together, 22.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 30.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.06.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.0% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 83.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $26,197, and the median income for a family was $36,481. Males had a median income of $28,066 versus $22,101 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,614. About 17.8% of families and 20.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.9% of those under age 18 and 19.3% of those age 65 or over.
