Lanesborough-Ballyleague
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lanesborough and Ballyleague (Irish: Béal Átha Liag) are two very small villages in the midlands of Ireland with Lanesborough on the Longford side and Ballyleague on the County Roscommon side of the River Shannon. Lanesborough is the site of one of Ireland's first turf-fired generating stations. The village is in a pivoted position located on the River Shannon at the northern entrance to Lough Ree. The town's name is derived from the family name Lane who once owned large tracts of land in the surrounding area. The River Shannon divides Lanesboro from Ballyleague which is located on the Roscommon side. Lanesboro today has blossomed into a thriving little town with plenty of facilities for visitors and locals.
The Lanesborough-Ballyleague area is best known for its fishing industry with many different types of ethnic people comin to fish on the Shannon. it receives a couple of thousand tourists every year and the Ragatta and the horse fair are very important for its economy.
Although primarily seen as one parish both are unique and different to each other and Lanesborough boosts more services but Ballyleague has many claims to fame most notably the Monastry founded by St.Brendan at the abbey in Cloontuskert. He found it in the 14th Century and left it to his brother St.Faithleach who the local football team is now named after. The well is historic and is known to have magical powers that cure disease.
