Landsat 6 was designed to continue the Landsat program, and was equipped with an upgraded set of instruments. It was launched on October 5th, 1993, using a Titan II launch vehicle. However, a launch failure meant Landsat 6 failed to reach orbit, and so Landsat 4 and Landsat 5 were used well beyond their designed lifespan, the latter still active.
