IMDb profile |
Lancelot du Lac is 1974 film that was written and directed by Robert Bresson. It is based on Arthurian legend, and is told in a highly stylistic manner. It relates the story of Lancelot and Guinevere's love, as Camelot and the Round Table fall apart. It is also based on medieval romances, especially the Lancelot-Grail cycle, and the works of Chrétien de Troyes.
In common with Bresson's other films from the period, the cast was composed of amateur actors, several of whom did not appear in any other films. Bresson's direction demanded a purposeful lack of emotion from the acting, and reduced or eliminated the fantastical elements of the Grail legend. The unglamorous depiction of the middle ages, with an emphasis on blood and grime, was a big influence on the subsequent Monty Python film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which had a similar style but was played for comic effect. Grail co-director Terry Gilliam notes on the audio commentary of his film that, while at a screening of Lancelot du Lac, the audience burst into laughter.

[edit] Film Synopsis
From renowned French director Robert Bresson comes this spare and haunting version of the legend of Camelot. The story begins as the Knights of the Round Table return to Camelot after their futile search for the blessed Holy Grail. Lancelot (Luc Simon), the leader of the quest, is reunited with Queen Guinevere (Laura Duke Condominas), who begs him to become her lover. Convinced that his impure thoughts are the reason for his recent misfortune, Lancelot assures Guinevere that he will neither cease his search nor become her lover. However, when the jealousy of another knight, Mordred (Patrick Bernard), spurs rebellion in the land, Lancelot decides to remain in Camelot and fight until death for King Arthur (Vladimir Antolek-Oresek). Along the way, he accidentally murders his best friend, Gawain (Humbert Balsan), giving Mordred an added edge in their battle.
