I have lived in Waihola since 1985 and have explored the wetlands extensively as I was growing up - as young boys like to do - and have never heard of nor seen any species of otter. I would suggest that this is an urban legend (or rural legend as Waihola is). However I stand to be proven wrong! :-) TimGrin 05:58, 20 Oct 2004 (UTC)

I lived in Milton from 1975-80, and have lived in Dunedin ever since. I can remember a couple of hunts for the otter - one from the time I was in Milton, and one that a friend of mine from the University of Otago zoology dept. was involved with in the early '80s. Don't know whether they concluded that it never existed or not - I don't know of much interest in it since - but it was definitely investigated!
