Lakewood High School (California)

Lakewood High School is a public secondary school located in the Southern California city of Lakewood. Founded in 1954, it is part of the Long Beach Unified School District. They served 1770 sophmores, juniors, and seniors. Lakewood is the architectural twin of nearby Millikan, which opened in 1956. The school mascot is the Lancer and their colors are red and white. The school secondary mascot is the Dragon and their secondary color is black. Lakewood High School's motto is "Today's lancer, Tomorrow's leaders." It has such notoriety as being the campus which hosted the nationally exposed Lakewood Spur Posse during the early 90s, until March 18, 1993, when it came to national attention. The film The Rage: Carrie 2 emulates the Lakewood Spur Posse (released 1999)

Lakewood plays in the Harry J. Moore League, against rivals Long Beach Poly, Mayfair, and Millikan. The team is led by coach Thadd MacNeal. The lancers play their home games at "John Ford Stadium". The Lancers are usually competitive, as they usually post winning records. From 1966 to 1969, Lakewood won 3 Moore League championships, including an 11-1 record in 1966.

Notable alumni include Billy Belman, whose efforts helped the Lancers achieve a 9-0 season in 1988. This record helped the Lancers win the divisional championship.

Lakewood's baseball team is one of the most consistent programs in California, with 27 Moore League titles as of 2006 [1]. The 2006 season saw the team win the CIF Southern Section Division I Championship, the fifth in the history of the program, against Agoura High School, winning 2-1 at Angel Stadium. The team is lead by coach Spud O'Neil.

The Merit Scholars Program is available to entering freshmen with a minimum grade point average of 3.3, ready to enter Geometry, average attendance and citizenship, and a desire for achievement. The program provides an opportunity for students to take Lakewood's rigorous Honors and Advanced Placement courses. Students with at least a 3.3 unweighted GPA at graduation receive a Lakewood High School Merit Scholar diploma, a medallion, and wear distinguished Merit Scholar honor apparel.
