[edit] History and Development
Construction of the centre commenced in 1991, and opened in late November 1994. It celebrated in 10 year anniversary in 2004, and invited all retailers who had remained in the centre since it's opening to a gala party held in The Great Space.
[edit] Redevelopments
The centre has undergone a number of relevant extensions and developments since opening[1].
[edit] Stage 1
The cinema, originally opened as a Greater Union was constructed on top of the Joondalup Line railway reserve and opened in 1998. Sometime post 2000, the cinema was then sold to Grand Cinemas.
[edit] Stage 2
In 1999, the centre has added a new Department Store (Target) in the South-west corner. The area was originally left vacant and was secured until the construction phase began.
[edit] Stage 3
Lakeside Joondalup Shopping City is being developed extensively between 2006 to 2007, the area being expanded to about twice of its original size. The expected completion of redevelopment is in late 2008. The expansion of the centre will take the new wing to two stories comprising of an additional 29,000 squares metres of retail and office floor space, with the ground floor at the level of the existing centre and upper level shops at the Grand Boulevard level. On completion of the works, the centres GLA will be over 70,000 square metres[2].
The expansion will include a new major supermarket, department store and some 100 speciality stores, as well as adding a three story parking structure of 1,710 new car bays located on the south eastern side of the site. The new extensions will connect with the existing centre via an enclosed area over Station Square. As part of the extension, ING Real Estate has obtained an "Air Rights Lease" from the Government of Western Australia[3] that will enable it to construct facilities in this are on the proviso that the area remains open for use by the general public from the commencement to cessation of rail services at the adjoining Joondalup Interchange.
[edit] Architectural Features
The most striking feature of the centre is the main area known as The Great Space. It consists of a number of white tent-like structures covering a major area of the centre, with a large centre stage and display area in the middle of the area. Also inside the Lakeside Joondalup Shopping City, several kinds of trees and plants are in there inside of the centre part of the internal layout.

Adjoining the centre is the Joondalup Interchange, opened in 1993. The station services the Joondalup Line as well as numerous bus routes covering suburbs from Whitfords to Clarkson and beyond.
