Lake Ruth is a small artificial lake located on the campus of Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois. Built in 1908 by local businessman John Keefer, Lake Ruth was created by damming a nearby ravine. The lake was named by the wife of then university president Alfred Bayliss after Keefer's daughter, Ruth.[1]
Lake Ruth is located directly in front of Simpkins Hall which primarily houses the campus English and Journalism departments. In 2005, Lake Ruth was over-run with duckweed and anaerobic microorganisms causing a poor appearance and aroma of the lake. Grass carp and dredging were used to address the problems.[2]
