Coregonus kiyi orientalis |
The Lake Ontario Kiyi (Coregonus kiyi orientalis) is a fish which was last recorded from Lake Ontario, Canada in 1964. This subspecies was driven to extinction by commercial exploitation, predation and competition by introduced species.[citation needed]
It was similar to other fish species such as the bloater and shortjaw cisco occurring at depths of 35-200 m. The Lake Ontario Kiyi tended to have a larger head with large eyes, long ventral fins and long gill rakers, usually numbering fewer than 44. Its colour was similar to other ciscoes which have silvery sides with pink or purple irridescence, dark backs and white undersides.
