[edit] Sports

On March 2, 2007, the Lake Howell Silverhawks boys' varsity basketball team won the the class 5A State Championship. The team, led by seniors Nick Calathes, Chandler Parsons, and Joey Rodriguez defeated St. Petersberg Lakewood by a score of 85-42. The margin of victory is the largest in the history of the FHSAA finals, which started in 1922. [1]. The basketball team has also been featured in various publications, including Sports Illustrated. [2]

Three NFL players are alumni of the school. Defensive lineman Trevor Pryce was drafted in the 1st round by the Denver Broncos in 1997. He is now with the Baltimore Ravens. Receiver Brandon Marshall, was drafted by the Denver Broncos in 2006, and linebacker Kawika Mitchell, selected by the Chiefs in the second round (47th overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft. Mitchell was also an all-state selection as a senior at Lake Howell.

In 2005 and 2006, the Girls' Varsity Golf team won the Class 2A state tournament.

[edit] Theater

Lake Howell Theater Company is performing 14 plays during the 2006-2007 school year, including Equus by Peter Shaffer and The Diary of Anne Frank by Wendy Kesselman. Teacher James Brendlinger and theater students are also members of the International Thespian Society as Troupe 4937. In 2005, the troupe was selected to perform The Bald Soprano by Eugene Ionesco at the Florida State Thespian Festival.

Also unique to Lake Howell is the Bad Medicine Comedy Troupe. It is the only acting group in the United States whose material is entirely written, produced and performed by students on a high school stage. To date, Bad Medicine has performed six original plays, and will perform another in April.

[edit] Band

Lake Howell's marching band, the "Silver Regiment", has been performing for nearly 30 years. In 2006 it won many awards, including multiple "Grand Champion" distinctions at events. They are considered one of the top marching bands in the state of Florida. The Lake Howell Band Parent Association (LHBPA) handles the finances of the band throughout the year. They are widely regarded as one of the best band parent groups in the state.

After marching season is over, the band is split into different classes, Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble. The Symphonic Band is comprised mainly of Freshman and Sophomores, and sometimes a few Juniors. Wind Ensemble is made up of mostly Juniors and Seniors, though some Freshman and Sophomores are admitted into the class. There are separate classes for percussionists. The 2006 concert season is no different for the Silver Regiment. The Wind Ensemble received straight Superiors at district festival on March 2 and is on its way to receiving straight Superiors for the entire band season, including marching and concert seasons. The Symphonic Band received straight Excellents and a Superior in Sight Reading, making the first Superior rating for the Symphonic Band in the history of the school.

The whole band program is headed by director Todd Leighton, an alumni of the University of Central Florida.

[edit] Band

Let's not forget about the colorguard on the Lake Howell Silver Regiment as well. They have received first place at an FFCC ( Florida Federations of Colorguards Circuit) event last year. After the marching season is over the Lake Howell (Imagination) colorguard goes into its winter guard season. This 2007 season they performed to the song Until the Day I Die and made it to finals in their WGI tournament.
