Lake County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 11,276. Its county seat is Madison6.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,489 km² (575 mi²). 1,459 km² (563 mi²) of it is land and 31 km² (12 mi²) of it (2.06%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 11,276 people, 4,372 households, and 2,828 families residing in the county. The population density was 8/km² (20/mi²). There were 5,282 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (9/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 97.76% White, 0.20% Black or African American, 0.66% Native American, 0.54% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 0.51% from two or more races. 0.79% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 4,372 households out of which 29.80% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.90% were married couples living together, 5.90% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.30% were non-families. 29.20% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.30% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the county, the population was spread out with 23.70% under the age of 18, 15.00% from 18 to 24, 23.40% from 25 to 44, 21.40% from 45 to 64, and 16.30% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 99.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.50 males.
