Lajes (Praia da Vitória)

Lajes is a parish in the municipality of Praia da Vitória in the Azores. The population in 2001 is 3,753, its density is 336.6 /km² and the area is 11.15 km². It is the second largest and the most populated parish in the municipality of Praia da Vitória. It is located in the northeastern part of Terceira. The main industry are business and agriculture. It is also the most densely populated parish in Praia da Vitória. The Atlantic is to the northeast and the mountains to the southwest.

In the parish of Lajes, Lajes Field ([1])--Portuguese Air Force Base No. 4--is used by the U.S. military under an agreement with Portugal. The airfield also has a small civilian commercial air terminal, which handles scheduled and chartered flights from North America and the European mainland.

Lajes has several elementary schools with the main one located in Aldeia Nova. It has two churches with the main one dating back to the 1500s. This church has been destroyed by earthquakes in 1614 and 1841 and partially destroyed in the January 1st, 1980 earthquake. The other smaller church is located in Cabouco.
