[edit] Rationale of fair use for Serial Experiments Lain
- The image is a screenshot from the DVD of the film Serial Experiments Lain from Pioneer LCD, and intended for wide distribution.
- This image illustrates the text next to which it appears, meaning it describes the use of advanced technology in the series.
- The screenshot is of lower resolution than the original film (copies made from it will be of inferior quality).
- No free or public domain images have been located for this film.
- The screenshot does not limit the copyright owners' rights to distribute the film in any way.
- The screenshot is being used for informational purposes only, and its use is not believed to detract from the original film in any way.
[edit] Fair use for Cyberpunk
This image is a single frame from a fairly well-known anime, Serial Experiments Lain, a series whose fanbase considers it an example of "anime as literature" (quoting the Lain article). The scene depicted here illustrates a common image in cyberpunk media, the hacker in deep-hacking mode surrounded by video screens. (Compare, e.g., Neo's first appearance in The Matrix.) Having this picture in the article provides an illuminating reference both for the cyberpunk visual style and for cyberpunk thematic content, in addition to supplying an instance of a common trope. It is therefore of considerable scholarly utility.
No free or public domain images of this scene (or its analogues in other visual media works) have been located. This picture does not compromise the Serial Experiments Lain storyline, nor does it interfere with the copyright holders' ability to profit from Lain.
