Lady Mevrian

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Eric Rucker Eddison's fantasy The Worm Ouroboros - Lady Mevrian is a great lady of Demonland and a key actor in several chapters of the book. She is the only named lady of Demonland. Her brother is the mighty hero Brandoch Daha.

Lady Mevrian is described as follows

a lady light of build and exceeding fair to look upon, brave of carriage like a war-horse, soft of feature, clear-browed, gray-eyed and proud-eyed: sweet-mouthed, but not as one who can speak nought but sweetness. Her robe was of pale buff-coloured silk, with corsage covered as by a spider's web with fine golden threads; and she wore a point-lace ruffle stiffened with gold and silver wire and spangled with little diamonds. Her deep hair, black as the raven's wing, was fastened with pins of gold, and a yellow rose that nestled in its coils was as the moon looking forth among thick clouds of night. (page 134)

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The Lady Mevrian is present at the council in which Lord Juss and her brother plan their expedition to Impland in search of Goldry Bluszco. Later she is forced to defend her brother's castle of Knothering against the army of Corinius of Witchland. After a siege, the castle is taken and Lady Mevrian has to fend off the advances of Corinius. She is able to escape only with the aid of Lord Gro, who betrays Witchland to help her. Together they flee from the Witchland forces sent by Corinius to capture them.

They are brought to bay at the end of chapter 23 and she and Lord Gro must fight a group of Witchland soldiers. She kills one warrior but capture seems certain when suddenly her brother and Lord Juss appear, having returned after more than a year's journey.

Although she is grateful to Lord Gro for saving her from Corinius, she does not love him. Oddly, none of the other lords of Demonland seem to think of her as a potential wife.
