Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin

Lac du Flambeau is a town in Vilas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 3,004 at the 2000 census. The land base of the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa is located within the town and also consists of a large portion of the town.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 330.8 km² (127.7 mi²). 259.8 km² (100.3 mi²) of it is land and 71.0 km² (27.4 mi²) of it (21.45%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 3,004 people, 1,093 households, and 821 families residing in the town. The population density was 11.6/km² (29.9/mi²). There were 2,981 housing units at an average density of 11.5/km² (29.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 39.55% White, 0.20% Black or African American, 59.39% Native American, 0.30% from other races, and 0.57% from two or more races. 1.60% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 1,093 households out of which 31.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.2% were married couples living together, 19.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.8% were non-families. 20.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.07.
In the town the population was spread out with 29.8% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 23.0% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 99.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.6 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $30,349, and the median income for a family was $33,036. Males had a median income of $27,589 versus $22,560 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,176. About 12.1% of families and 15.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.1% of those under age 18 and 5.0% of those age 65 or over.

For the 2000 census, the U.S. Census Bureau designated the most populated 5 square miles of the town as the Lac du Flambeau Census Designated Place (CDP). The following statistics, which are included in the above totals for the town, refer only to the CDP.
As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 1,646 people, 524 households, and 410 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 126.3/km² (327.5/mi²). There were 771 housing units at an average density of 59.2/km² (153.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 12.33% White, 0.30% Black or African American, 86.57% Native American, 0.30% from other races, and 0.49% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.13% of the population.
There were 524 households out of which 46.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.7% were married couples living together, 31.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.6% were non-families. 16.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.14 and the average family size was 3.43.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 38.7% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 16.4% from 45 to 64, and 8.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 26 years. For every 100 females there were 100.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.0 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $27,381, and the median income for a family was $28,350. Males had a median income of $24,750 versus $22,240 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $11,496. About 18.9% of families and 21.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 26.8% of those under age 18 and 3.1% of those age 65 or over.
