Labour Party (UK) leadership election, 1935
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 1935 Labour Party leadership election took place on 26 November 1935 when Herbert Morrison and Arthur Greenwood challenged Clement Attlee, the incumbent party leader of only one month and one day. Both the candidates thought it was unfair that Clement Attlee had been elected leader of the Labour Party without a formal contest.
The first round of the contest took place on 26 November 1935:
Name | Votes | |
---|---|---|
Clement Attlee | 58 | |
Herbert Morrison | 44 | |
Arthur Greenwood | 33 |
As the lowest-placed candidate, Greenwood was eliminated from the race.
The second contest took place on 3 December:
Name | Votes | |
---|---|---|
Clement Attlee | 88 | |
Herbert Morrison | 48 |
With a clear majority, Attlee retained the party leadership.
