On April 30, 1598 in present day San Elizario, Texas, Don Juan de Oñate made a legal declaration that Spain was "taking possession" of all territory north of the Rio Grande River for King Philip II of Spain or Rey Felipe II de España. This was a land annexation to Nueva España.
