La Savane

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

La Savane is a park located just across the bay of Fort-de-France in Martinique. It was formerly known as Jardin du Roy (garden of the king) and its first purpose is said to have been to harbour scientific experiments on plants that were new to the then colony.

Its caribbean gardens are also facing (on one of its sides) the Fort Saint-Louis (formerly known as Fort Royal) and (on another side) the Bibliotheque Schoelcher (or Schoelcher Library), a Romanesque-Byzantine gem built more than 100 years ago for the Paris Exposition of 1889. This park has no fence and is harbouring the statue of Josephine Tascher de La Pagerie born on the island in 1763, later known as Josephine de Beauharnais, wife of Napoleon and Empress of France. It also shelters a tiny colourful market where exotic items and souvenirs can be found.
