La Pointe County, Wisconsin

La Pointe County was established in 1845. Its parent county was St. Croix County, encompassing the remaining portions of the Northwest Territory in Wisconsin Territory north of the line drawn from the confluence of the Ripple River with the Mississippi River (today, near Aitkin, MN) to the western edge of Lac Courte Orielles, to the eastern edge of Lac Courte Oreilles, and to the western branch of the Montreal River.
When the State of Wisconsin achieved statehood on May 29, 1848, La Pointe County was divided into two. La Pointe County of the Wisconsin Territory that did not become part of the State of Wisconsin was re-organized upon creation of Minnesota Territory in 1849 as Itasca County.
La Pointe County that became part of Wisconsin became the parent county to Douglas and Ashland Counties. La Pointe County was renamed Bayfield County in 1866.
