La Cumparsita

La Cumparsita is a musical piece written by the Uruguayan musician Gerardo Matos Rodríguez in 1919. La Cumparsita is perhaps the most famous and recognizable Tango song of all time. Is by law, the popular and cultural anthem of Uruguay. It was showed in Confitería La Giralda, the place where nowadays is located in the historic Palacio Salvo in the downtown of Montevideo. La Cumparsita is the most important song of the Tango. Due to its symbolic importance, there were a lot of problems between Uruguay and Argentina in many international contests. In the Olympic Games of Sydney 2000, the argentinian team marched using the music of La Cumparsita. This originated protests and claims by the Uruguayan government.

La Cumparsita, sometimes in three or more versions, is played at the end of a Milonga, telling the tangodancers; "this is the end".
