La Costa Canyon High School is one of the high schools in the San Dieguito Union High School District. Located on 88 acres (360,000 m²) in south Carlsbad in northwest San Diego County, La Costa Canyon opened in September, 1996. The students attending La Costa Canyon live in Encinitas and south Carlsbad. These communities include both beach and agricultural areas and lie in proximity to the University of California, San Diego, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the Salk Institute, and Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation. The student body typically comes from affluent and highly educated families. La Costa Canyon High School was honored as a 1999 California Distinguished School and was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2001[citation needed].

The school mascot is the Maverick.

Approximately 3,200 students attend La Costa Canyon High School with a senior class of about 700. The pupil-teacher ratio is 34:1. The average SAT score is in the 1150-1200 range, making LCCHS one of the most academically acclaimed public schools in the state. Over 97 percent of the students are college bound. Gradutates of La Costa Canyon typically attend UC and CSU schools, in addition to the most elite colleges in the United States. Popular choices among past graduates are most UC schools, and many Ivy League and other comparable institutions.

La Costa Canyon operates on a rotating block schedule. Students attend three of their six classes on one day with each class 115 minutes in length. The remaining three classes meet the following day. All students are expected to carry a minimum of six classes with some seniors who have already met graduation requirements only taking five. Some optional zero-period (before the start of a normal school day) and 7th period (after the end of a normal school day) classes are available.

The faculty consists of a principal, four assistant principals, one dean, six counselors, a media-specialist, and over 125 certificated staff members. Approximately 70% have degrees beyond a Bachelor's Degree.

La Costa Canyon offers a full men's and/or women's athletic program in the following sports: basketball, baseball, football, softball, wrestling, soccer, golf, cross country, track and field, gymnastics, tennis, volleyball, field hockey, swimming, waterpolo, and lacrosse. Surfing is a club sport available to LCCHS students. Women's soccer, men's and women's volleyball, baseball, men's golf, men's tennis, men's basketball, wrestling, field hockey, and lacrosse have been nationally recognized for their excellence in the past two years. Chase Budinger a 2006 graduate was a nationally recognized Basketball and Volleyball player. He currently plays on the University of Arizona basketball team. Don't Forget Skate PE!
