La Catedral
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
La Catedral was a prison near Medellín in Colombia where Pablo Escobar stayed, and had his own men guard him. Under an agreement with the Colombian government, Escobar had this prison built to his exact standards. The finished compound had more of a resemblance to a country club or a five star hotel than to an actual detention facility. Because of this it was sometimes referred to as "Hotel Escobar." For contemporary analysts, the prison was seen as having been established more to keep people who wanted to kill him out rather than to keep Escobar in per se. It was also considered at the time that most of the guards were loyal to him. When Escobar finally decided to escape in response to a government attempt to transfer him to another facility, he and some of his closest associates walked out the back door. 15 months later he was finally tracked down and shot by Colombian forces with the help of the CIA and Delta Force.
