[edit] Background
Kyla Tyson is the Acting Sister of Keller Ward at Holby City Hospital. She also works on AAU. She arrived at Holby after separating from her husband Harvey, with whom she has a twelve year old son, Max. Before becoming a nurse, Kyla was an athlete. Although she still runs as a hobby, she can no longer compete due to a hamstring injury.
[edit] Overview
Kyla has a quick temper, which has caused her problems at work on several occasions. She has clashed repeatedly with some of her colleagues, most notably referring to Critical Care Consultant Lola Griffin as a 'self righteous cow' and pushing Clinical Matron Chrissie Williams to the ground, resulting in her being forced to enroll in anger management classes.
Her relationship with her husband Harvey is equally tempestuous, and although the pair have recently reunited after a period of acrimonious separation, they remain increasingly violent towards one another. Kyla is especially overprotective of her son Max, although has repeatedly demonstrated difficulty in coping as a single mother - constantly having to bring Max to work with her, and in one instance allowing him to be kidnapped by her current lover, resulting in Harvey challenging her for custody.
Kyla has also demonstrated a poor taste in men - firstly resuming a relationship with colleague Justin Fuller, who would go on to ply Max with alcohol, sending him into a hypoglycemic coma, then having a brief but intense relationship with General Surgical Consultant Abra Durant, who left her broken hearted after slipping away into the night without saying goodbye, and finally resuming her relationship with Harvey, regardless of his exhibiting verbal and physical violence towards her.
[edit] Character History
Kyla arrived at Holby City partway through series eight. On her first day working as an Agency Nurse, she irritated some members of staff by taking personal calls and leaving partway through her shift to collect her son Max from school. However, she impressed General Surgical Consultant Ric Griffin, who encouraged her to apply for a permanent position. Deciding it might give Max some stability in his life, Kyla accepted.
Shortly into her employment at Holby City Hospital, Kyla's colleague, Nurse Donna Jackson, began dating Physiotherapist Justin Fuller. It transpired that Kyla and Justin had previously had a relationship, and Kyla warned Donna off of him. Over the next few months, Kyla and Justin became closer again, with Justin helping out by taking Max to football games and watching him after school. Justin began seeing both Donna and Kyla, although ultimately chose to pursue a relationship with Kyla. It became increasingly obvious that Justin made a poor role model for Max, allowing him to stay up late, play 18 rated video games, and eventually hiding him in the hospital basement and plying him with alcohol in episode 'Extreme Measures.' Max, a diabetes sufferer, slipped into a hypoglycemic coma. Although he recovered in full and Justin was arrested by Kyla's policeman husband Harvey, Harvey deemed Kyla an unfit mother and decided to fight her for custody of Max.
Kyla and Harvey fought a short custody battle, and although their initial attempt at mediation in 'Team Holby' seemed hopeful, they ended up rowing minutes later, failing to resolve their issues. Throughout the episode 'Nothing Ventured, Nothing Lost', Kyla was tailed for the day by the CAFCASS officer assigned to her case, and ended up making a very poor impression. This was also the episode during which Kyla lost her temper with Chrissie Williams, pushing her to the floor. It was not until the episode 'Taking Liberties', when it transpired that Max had been bullying another child at school, who was admitted to Holby after Max kicked him in the head, that Kyla and Harvey called a truce on their custody battle. They agreed to attempt to get along better, for Max's sake.
Shortly after this, Kyla began a mild flirtation with recent arrival, General Surgical Consultant Abra Durant. Their relationship very quickly became physical, and was progressing well until Kyla discovered HIV medication in his desk drawer in episode 'Crossing the Line.' Kyla assumed that Abra was suffering from HIV, and ended her relationship with him. In actuality, Abra was stealing used medicine from the Hospital pharmacy to send to Africa, which he revealed to her in episode 'The Very Thought of You', setting up a romantic tableau in the hospital car park to woo her back. Kyla went on to cover for Abra over both the drug stealing, and an illegal pig's kidney transplant he had performed a few months previously. Eventually, Abra was caught out by new consultant Dan Clifford, and told to leave Holby without saying goodbye. Although Abra managed to leave a note informing her to give his beloved cricket bat to her son, his taxi pulled away before Kyla made it outside, leaving her collapsing, devastated, in the hospital car park.
In the weeks immediately after this, Kyla's relationship with her husband and son was shown to be as unstable as ever. Max was briefly admitted to Holby as a patient after wandering off onto the wards and contracting food poisoning, following a fight with his mother. In episode 'Can't Buy Me Love', Harvey and Kyla continually rowed over a patient on the wards Kyla suspected of having been abused by his son, as well as their differing approaches to raising Max. A full scale fight erupted in the toilets while Max hid in one of the stalls, during which Kyla berated and pushed Harvey, and he retaliated by hitting her, leaving her in need of stitches. Kyla subsequently lied, saying she had sustained the injury by tripping.
Episode 'The Borders of Sleep' saw Harvey return to AAU to interview the same patient Kyla had suspected of being abused. He apologized to Kyla for hitting her, and asked her to take him back. The pair again rowed throughout the episode, although shared a heated kiss in the car park. The patient at the centre of the abused case riled them both individually, suggesting that Kyla enjoyed being put in her place by her husband, and that Harvey had paedophilic feelings for his son. An enraged Harvey was provoked into attacking him, pushing him out of bed and causing him to be rushed into surgery. When Lola made clear she intended to report Harvey, Kyla lied for him, telling her no one had witnessed the attack. Harvey then asked Kyla again to take him back, and this time she agreed. The pair left together, and whether they will be successful in attempting to rebuild their marriage currently remains to be seen.
