[edit] History

KVIQ signed on the air as Eureka's second television station on April 1, 1958. Since the Eureka market only had two TV stations in those early days, KVIQ offered programs from several networks. By the 1980s, the station was the area's primary NBC affiliate, but KVIQ also carried some ABC programs as the area's ABC affiliate, KAEF, had not yet signed on the air.

The station was, at one time, owned by the Ackerley Media Group. Ackerley invested quite a bit of money into its news operations. Ackerley merged with corporate giant Clear Channel Communications in 2002. Not long after this merger, the news operation at KVIQ was quickly abandoned. Clear Channel sold the station to its current owner, Raul Broadcasting, in 2005. Though Raul Broadcasting owns the license, the station is, in effect, run by the Eureka Television Group[1], which also operates the Fox, The CW, My Network TV, and Univision outlets in the market. It is also operated by Sainte Partners II, L.P., owners of several stations in the Sacramento, Chico and Medford markets.

In California, the Eureka television market and the Yuma-El Centro market are the only TV markets currently not available on either Dish Network or DirecTV.

[edit] Translators

KVIQ is rebroadcast on the following translator stations:

[edit] News Operation

KVIQ had once aired a newscast, entitled Action News 6, which could not keep up with KIEM. So, KVIQ had gotten rid of its newscasts, and was replaced by morning & 10pm rebroadcasts of newscasts from then sister station KFTY in Santa Rosa, California. After KVIQ was sold off in 2005, the KFTY rebroadcasts ceased, and that was the end of KVIQ airing local news.

[edit] Programs

When local news ended on KVIQ, the Noon spot was replaced with a Paid Program. 5:00 & 6:30pm were replaced with Everybody Loves Raymond, 5:30pm was replaced with Frasier, and 11:00pm was replaced with Inside Edition. KVIQ also airs The Oprah Winfrey Show at 7:00pm.
