Kvar

Kvar is a fictional character from the Tales of Symphonia video game.
Kvar is one of the Desian Grand Cardinals and revered as the cruelest due to his methods of handling humans. He was in charge of the Asgard Human Ranch and was the most active member of the Angelus Project. He is responsible for turning Anna (Lloyd's mother) into a monster and forcing Kratos to kill her. He is also responsible for the destruction of Luin and the capturing of its citizens. At some point, he formed a supposed alliance with Rodyle and Magnius in an attempt to usurp power and overthrow Cruxis. He is also a very powerful sorcerer with his control over Lightning magic. He wields a staff with a circular blade at its tip.
Lloyd and his party meet with Kvar at the Asgard Ranch, after seeing the destroyed city of Luin and coming to the decision to rescue the citizens. Kvar, with his men, corners the party and explains to them that Human Ranches are Exsphere manufacturing plants, and that Lloyd's Exsphere was a product of Kvar's own Angelus Project. The Exspheres, he claims, feed on the lifeforces of the host bodies they are attached to. Exspheres only awaken during periods of heightened emotional stress, so the Human Ranches serve to create this aura of terror and pain on their human prisoners, thereby awakening the Exspheres they are attached to. He also reveals that Lloyd's mother, Anna, was the host body of the Exsphere Lloyd himself now carries, a special Exsphere that was used in the Angelus Project (an attempt to turn a regular Exsphere into a Cruxis Crystal). She paid with her life when she attempted to escape the Grand Cardinal with Lloyd's father. Kvar, demanding the return of Lloyd's Exsphere, orders his Desian troops to attack. The party is saved when Sheena uses her last Guardian to save them. Later on, when the party re-enters the Ranch, Kvar is seen talking to a hologram of Pronyma and accusing her of stealing data from his Angelus Project. Pronyma denies these claims and reveals that Lord Yggdrasill knows about Kvar's collaboration with Rodyle on the Mana Cannon project. She then breaks the connection. Lloyd's group challenges the cruelest Cardinal, and the fight begins.
Kvar uses powerful lighting-based spells such as Lightning, Spark Wave, and Lightning Strike. He also uses a non-elemental attack called Guardian Shield which defends him from attacks for a short time. This is a hard fight as the player is at the disadvantage of having only three characters while fighting Kvar and his three lightning stones.
After the battle, Lloyd is rejoined by the three other party members. Suddently, Kvar gets up and attacks Lloyd, but fails when Colette leaps in the way. An enraged Lloyd turns and stabs Kvar, and Kratos does the same. Kvar accuses Kratos of being a foolish, inferior being. Kratos then kills Kvar, saying, "Feel the pain... of those inferior beings... as you burn in hell!" Kvar then falls, once and for all. Raine begins the self-destruct sequence on the Ranch, and the party leaves. When they are gone, Rodyle appears as a hologram, thanking Kvar and mocking him one last time. The Ranch is then destroyed.
