[edit] History
It was in the year 1958, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay started functioning with retired Brigadier S.K.Bose as its first Director. In the year 1959 the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation stone of the Powai Campus.
Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan an autonomous body had been set up by the Ministry of Education Govt. of India. To cater to the educational needs of the wards of the IIT employees, K.V. IIT Powai started functioning with three hundred students on 15th June 1964 under the leadership of Professor S.K.Bose as the first chariman of the Vidyalaya. Shri. S. Ramchandran was the first principal of the Vidyalaya who led and guided a team of about 25 staff members.
The school was to run in two shifts due to shortage of space - Primary in the morning and Secondary in the noon shift. As the number of students increased, the school building also had to be expanded. Today, we see a huge, three - storey school building, having four wings, meant separately for the Primary, Secondary and Senior Secondary Sections. It is a co-educational institution, with classes from I to XII, affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi.
Over the last forty years, the Vidyalaya has received guidance and support from the Ten Directors of IIT-Bombay and Ten Principals of the Vidyalaya. A Vidyalaya that started in 1964 with about three hundred students, has expanded into a body of more than two thousand students.
