Kuybyshev (town)

Kuybyshev, known as Kainsk until 1935 (Russian: Куйбышев), is a town in Novosibirsk Oblast in Russia, located on the Om River (Irtysh's tributary) some 315 km west of Novosibirsk. Population: 48,500 (2005 est.); 40,000 (1970).

Kuybyshev was founded as a military fort named Kainsky Pas (Каинский Посад) in 1722. In 1782, it was renamed Kainsk (Каинск) of the Tobol namestnichestvo and granted a town status. In 1804, it became a part of the Tomsk guberniya. In 1935, it was renamed Kuybyshev after Valerian Kuybyshev, who had been exiled to Kainsk in 1907 and lived here for two years.
