Kuvempu University (Kuvempu Vishwavidyalaya) is named after renowned Kannada poet Kuppali Venkatappagowda Puttappa, popularly known as Kuvempu, a doyen of Kannada literature.

Kuvempu University, the youngest of the affiliating Universities in Karnataka State, India. It came into existence on 29-06-1987. It is located at Jnana Sahyadri Campus. Jnana Sahyadri literally means River of Wisdom. Campus is located on the banks of picturesque Bhadra River Project in Shimoga district. Shimoga is a major city of Karnataka state about 280kms from Bangalore, the state capital.

Kuvempu University has territorial jurisdiction over four districts of Shimoga, Chitradurga, Davanagere and Chikmagalur. There are 24 Postgraduate Departments, 18 on the Shimoga main campus and 6 at the PG Centre, Davanagere involved in teaching and research. There are 124 degree colleges affiliated to Kuvempu University, in addition to four Constituent Colleges, administered by the University. Graduate and Postgraduate teaching programmes exist under the faculties of Arts, Commerce, Education, Engineering, Science and Technology, and Law.

The Postgraduate Centre is situated at Davanagere, which is a major town about 120 kms from Shimoga. The Postgraduate Departments of Economics, Commerce, M.B.A., Bio-Chemistry, Statistics and Microbiology are located at this centre. The Postgraduate Centre has modern pedagogical and research facilities. The sports and cultural activities are especially encouraged.

Governor of Karnataka Mr. TN Chaturvedi is the Chancellor of University. Other important functionaries are Mr. DH Shankaramurthy and Prof. BS Sherigara.
