[edit] Background

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Shiraishi is the Captain of Shitenhouji Chuu, and is a third year student at the school. Shiraishi is heralded as having 'Perfect Tennis', and is referred to as 'The Bible of Shitenhouji'. His skills are so great that he was already a Captain when he was only in his second year, and his team that year gave the eventual repeat Champions Rikkai Daigaku Fuzoku their toughest match of the entire tournament, when they met in the semi-finals. He is only shown to have one special shot, which is an unnamed shot where he hits the ball which spins in a ring motion while travelling towards his opponent.

He is initially introduced in the manga when the Captains of all teams in the National Tournament gather, events which aren't animated until the OVA. His personality and profile are shrouded in mystery, and very little detail is available on him as of the present. The biggest reason for this is that in the previous year, he had placed himself in the Singles 1 match against Rikkai Dai, and didn't get to play when Shitenhouji was swept.

Though he's famous for having 'Perfect Tennis', Shiraishi himself believes that perfect tennis is boring. However when his team lost in the previous Nationals, Shiraishi realizes that no matter how you play, all that matters in the end is winning the match. As the captain of his team, he has to bring his team victory, even if he has to play using the skills he feels are boring.

Shiraishi is often shown sporting white bandages on his arm, for some reason unknown. There are several instances where he attempts to take them off, but never really finishes the process and winds them back up.

Shiraishi is also known to be the only person who can placate or appease Kintarou Tooyama, the youngest and wildest member of their team. It is apparent in the manga that Kintarou has a very peculiar and strong imagination, and ever since he read a manga about monsters with poison claws, he's been irrationally and childishly (albeit seriously) afraid of Shiraishi.

[edit] Notable Matches

[edit] Shusuke Fuji

When Shitenhouji plays Seigaku in the semi-finals of the Nationals this year, Shiraishi schedules himself in the Singles 3 match, and plays Shusuke Fuji, who was previously undefeated in official Singles matches. Fuji pulls out all the stops, displaying upgraded versions of his famed 'Triple Counters', as well as his Final Counter, 'The Gate Keeper Hecatonchires'. In spite of that, Shiraishi's 'Perfect Tennis' is what prevails in the end. As of yet, this match has not yet been animated, as it is one of the more recent events in the manga.

[edit] Techniques

[edit] Perfect Tennis

Perfect tennis is the form that Shiraishi uses when he plays any match. Ryuzaki says that perfect tennis is achieved when one masters every technique in its basic form i.e. perfect forehand form, perfect overhead form. The first time Perfect Tennis is seen is in Shiraishi's match against Syuusuke Fuji. Shiraishi is able to hit Tsubame Gaeshi out of the air, knock away Fuji's racket when he uses Higuma Otoshi, and hit a volley winner when Hakugei bounces back towards Fuji. Finally, Shiraishi is able to find a way around even Fuji's Final Counter 'The Gate Keeper Hecatonchires'.

[edit] Unnamed Technique

This is a technique similar to one that is used by Kevin Smith in the anime. It has so far gone unnamed, and was first seen during his match against Fuji. When Shiraishi hits the ball, it'll fly in a ring formation until it hits the court, where it no longer bounces. Somewhat of a combination technique between COOL Drive and Tornado Snake.
