KURAU Phantom Memory (クラウファントムメモリー, KURAU Phantom Memory^?) is a Japanese science fiction anime series, produced by BONES and Media Factory, which was broadcast across Japan by the anime television network, Animax, and TV Asahi. Set about the year 2100, it explores themes such as inter-familial relationships and ethics in science. The series was licensed by A.D. Vision for North American localization since the first episode aired, though the first DVD won't be released until 2007.

Dr. Amami is a tireless scientist working in the field of alternative energy who at the beginning of the series is on the verge of a major breakthrough in the area of Rynax energy. On her 12th birthday, his daughter Kurau accompanies her father to the lab where an experiment goes horribly wrong and she is struck by a bolt of this energy and falls unconscious. When she wakes up again, it is found that her body has been taken over by the Rynaxes who are actually living organisms and not just a form of energy. One of them is too weak to awaken for ten years, which it eventually does by spawning an identical twin of Kurau (a bit like Eve from Adam's rib in the Bible), only having the body of a 12 year old. These two people look and interact very much like two sisters.

Originally believed to be a form of energy, Rynaxes are, in fact, binary life forms (i.e. existing in pairs) made up of pure energy that are channeled from an alternate dimension and not generated as Dr Amami believed. This channeling proves very traumatic for the Rynaxes resulting in their almost immediate deaths most of the time. The normal outcome of Rynaxes touching humans is the slow, agonising deaths of both. Kurau proves to be extremely fortunate because she and the Pair she 'merges' with lives in her in a symbiotic relationship. The Rynaxes also give her special powers such as x-ray vision, amazing strength and agility, and the ability to fly, pass through solid objects and generate great amounts of radiation, strong enough to disintegrate objects instantly.
