Kumoricon is an anime convention in the Portland Metro Area.

Kumoricon is a three day convention celebrating Japanese animation (anime) and its surrounding culture. Anime lovers come from near and far to participate in events, contests, discussions, and viewings with an anime theme. Kumoricon also supports the local anime community by attending local events and promoting anime clubs in the time before the convention.

Kumoricon is run by Altonimbus Entertainment, a not-for-profit organization. All staff are volunteers.

Most of the information in this article has been provided and updated by the volunteers that work for and with Kumoricon. See our official page for publicity contact information.

[edit] What does "Kumori" mean?

'Kumori' is a translation from Japanese, meaning 'cloudy'. Kumoricon originated in the state of Oregon, known for its rainy weather, and the name is meant to reflect this.

[edit] Events

Some of the most popular events include:

  • Gaming Room – Include popular PC & video games, DDR (Dance Dance Revolution), CCG (collectable card games), and RPGs. There are two gaming rooms: one exclusively for the popular PC, video games, and DDR and the other for card tournaments and RPGs.
  • Cosplay (costumed play acting) – An event is which people act out a skit while dressed as their favorite character. Most attendees at the convention wear elaborate costumes even if they are not participating in this event.
  • Fan Fiction – Fans of anime can let their creativity fly while writing stories and drawing pictures of their favorite characters.
  • Panels – Costume design, cat ear creation, authentic Japanese tea ceremonies, bonsai care, lessons in art and writing and many other diverse topics are represented in the many panels held throughout the convention. Guest speakers, sometimes artists, voice actors, or anime specialists usually have panels as well.
  • Karaoke – almost exclusively sung in Japanese.
  • Vendors Room and Artist’s Alley – Big time vendors and local craftspeople contribute to the array of items up for sale at the convention
  • Charity Auction – In its second year for Kumoricon. Last year we raised more than $1600.00 for p:ear a local Portland outreach program for youth.
  • Kumoricon Dance- The main events room is converted into a dance floor and music mixed by local DJ's as well as anime AMVs are played in an intense display of sound, dance and imagery.
  • Dating game - The anime dating game is a Kumoricon favorite where people who cosplay get to enjoy an anime style dating game.
