Kumara Parvata is a mountain located in Subramanya (village) of Sullia taluka, Karnataka. The village is known for the Hindu Kukke Subramanya Temple. In spite of being a small village, it is a well-known shrine, and draws large number of devotees throughout the year. The peak is at a height of about 1350m, and is about 13km from the temple. This mountain is on the border between Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu districts, so the lights of Somwarpet town in Kodagu can be seen from the peak.

This mountain is very popular among the trekkers of southern part of India especially those of Bangalore. A lot of youth visits this mountaion during weekends to escape from the monotonous over crowded Bangalore.

[edit] Starting point

Kukke-Subramanya a small town on Bangalore - Mangalore national highway about 230 Km from bangalore is the starting point for this trek. This place is well known for a huge temple dedicated to Snake god. Snakes especially king Cobras are abundant in the dense forests

covering this region of western ghats (western mountains of Indian penisula).

The first stage of the trek goes through a densly covered forest which takes about two hours of walking to complete it.This streach is infested by leeches and on should be careful of snakes. The forest opens up into a grass covered ridge and the mid way point of trek the bhutts place.

[edit] Bhutts Place

This is small farm land and orchard managed and run by two monks. This is the stopover point for the trek and is also used for night stay usually during the return journey as trek can not be completed in a single day due to its toughness and distance. The monks provide trekkers with night shelter, water and plain meals on request at a very nominal price. Trekkers need to use their own sleeping bags though.

After crossing the bhutts place the trekkers need to register them with a forest office check post. The ascend from here is gradual and

the mountain face is covered with thick green grass. This stage culminates near the top of the mountain which is covered with thickly vegitated forest.

The trek path becomes somewhat lost in the vegetation near the mountain top. The sceneic beauty of this place is awe inspiring.About a thirty minute of walking through brooks and bushes leads to the summit wihich is generally fog covered. There is a primitively built stone temple at the summit.
