Kum Kapu Affray (riot) (Turkish: Kumkapı ayaklanması) was initiated by the Hunchaks (Social Democrat Hunchakian Party). Harutiun Djangulian (member from Van) tried to assassinate the Patriarch of Istanbul. The goal was to persuade the Armenian clerics to bring their policies in align with the national politics of the new revolutionary elite in 27 July 1890.

[edit] Event

During the sunday mass on 27 July 1890, Harutiun Djangulian, Hunchak member of Van, advanced towards the altar to propagate his cause. The patriarch noted that reading political statements during the mass was inappropriate. The other Hunchak members supported Djangulian and Djangulian tried to assassinate the patriarch. The disorder grew to a near-riot. The Ottoman police were called to restore the peace. Two police officers were killed, but the peace was restored. No Armenians were arrested.

[edit] Result

Hunchaks contested with the Armenian clergy and developed an effective riot, without being killed or captured.
