KUMM
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
KUMM (89.7 FM, "The U90 Alternative") is a public radio station operated by the University of Minnesota, Morris. It is a member of Minnesota's Independent Public Radio network. Some disc jockeys do not pronounce the call sign on the air as it sounds like slang for sperm but many others don't mind and even enjoy declaring the call sign. Either way, the image of a sperm cell does appear in the station logo, and the station's student staff find many unique ways of alluding to the call sign, such as the yearly "HomeKUMMing" event. In past years, the station's t-shirt design included such ribald slogans as "The Only Station That Puts KUMM In Your Ear" and the more recent, and tamer, slogan is "KUMM: Sowing the Seeds of New Music Since 1972." You can listen to KUMM live on the internet at www.kumm.org
Students, faculty, and members of the Morris community comprise the DJ's at KUMM. Show format is left entirely up to the individual DJ's, but Top 40 songs from the last 10 years are not allowed in order to keep the station alternative.
