Kristan Bromley

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kristan Bromley (born March 7, 1972) is a British male skeleton racer, who took part in the 2005/2006 Skeleton World Cup and competed in the 2006 Winter Olympics.

He was nicknamed Dr Ice by the British media[1], as he has a PhD from the University of Nottingham in 1999 with a thesis entitled "Factors affecting the performance of skeleton bobsleds". When not competing, as of February 2006 he also works as a research officer at the University of Bath and is the founder of the company Ice Sport Technologies.

Bromley's first appearance at the Winter Olympics came in the Salt Lake City games in 2002, where he had a disappointing first run after taking a wrong line and passing through settled snow, finishing 13th overall.

He won five out of the seven World Cup events in 2004 and won the overall World Cup title. He ended the 2005-06 season in fifth. He has twice placed 4th in the World Championships, in 1999 and 2005.

He was expected to do well in the 2006 Winter Olympics. In the first heat he stayed in the first position for a significant time, and had achieved a new track record until another competitor overtook him. Kristan finished the first heat in 3rd place, with another fellow Briton in 4th. For the second and final heat he had a good start, and maintained his lead, however about half way through the course he lost his lead and finished in bronze medal position. Unfortunately for Kristan, it was not good enough, as the next two Canadian competitors finished above him, leaving Kristan in fifth place, no doubt a disappointment to him.

His girlfriend is the 2006 Winter Olympics silver medallist for skeleton, Shelley Rudman. She was receiving her medal at whilst Kristan was competing in the men's skeleton event.

Kristan appeared in an episode of Discovery Channel's Building the Winter Games documentary, showing Kristan preparing for the 2006 games, building his sled and being introduced to the track at Cesana for the first time.
